Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area

National Geographic/Trails Illustrated, Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, Utah, USA
Two-sided topographic map of the Flaming Gorge area, which actually straddles both Utah and Wyoming.  One side of the maps shows the northern, Wyoming portion (which is just south of the town of Green River) and a large area of adjacent public and private lands.  The reverse shows the southern portion in Utah---the area with the most recreational sites.  This latter portion of the map contains even more of Ashley National Forest, and the far eastern part of Wasatch National Forest; the map goes as far south as Steinaker State Recreation Area.

Also included on the map is a generous selecton of text describing the area with special notes on recreation and forest etiquette.  Map symbols depict, roads, trails, recreation sites, and much more.

Scale, about 1:90,000 (1 inch = about 1.4 miles).  Contour interval: 50 meters.  Size: about 37 x 25 inches.  Folded.  Plastic.

Earthwalk Press Shaded Relief Hiking Map and Guide: Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming
Detailed topographic map printed on two sides.  One side shows the entire park and large portions of the adjacent Teton and Targhee national forests.  Elevation contours are enhanced (and slightly obscured by) shaded relief, which reveals the form of the land.  Trails are clearly plotted.  Roads, campgrounds, picnic areas, backcountry campsites and zones, and numerous other features expected on good topo maps are also shown.  (See sample at right.)

On the reverse is a detail map showing about 1/4 of the area covered on the full park map at much larger scale: the area from Granite Canyon to Moran Canyon (prime backpacking and hiking country).  No relief shading on the detail, but it does have topographic contours, and, unlike the full park map, shows point-to-point trail mileages.  About half of this side of the publication is an extensive text section on backcountry regulations and minimum impact ethics, safety considerations, trail mileages, and trip suggestions.

Scale of full park map, 1:72,500 (1 inch = about 1.14 miles); scale of detail map, 1:48,000 (1 inch = about 0.75 mile).  Contour interval, both maps: 80 feet.  Size: about 27 x 39½ inches.  Folded.  Plastic.

Wind River Range

Earthwalk Press Northern Wind River Range, WY: Hiking Map & Guide
Detailed topographic map printed on two sides shows the north half of Bridger Wilderness and almost all Fitzpatrick Wilderness in the north part of the Wind River Range.  This area is within Bridger National Forest and Shoshone National Forest.  The map also covers significant portions of adjacent regions, including Teton National Forest and Wind River Indian Reservation.

The maps are half-sized compilations of 18 USGS 7.5' topos, and show the same elevation contours, water features, and woodland tints as the USGS quadrangles—but they are printed in easier-to-read ink.  The maps also include trails (bright red for visibility), access roads, campgrounds, and not much more: Most of the region is dedicated to wilderness, after all, and few cultural features are shown because wilderness, by definition, has little visible impact from human works.

Text along the lower borders of both sides of the map gives valuable information on the region, backcountry regulations, safety tips, and trip planning considerations.

Scale, 1:48,000 (1 inch = 4,000 feet = about ¾ mile).  Size: about 39 x 27 inches.  Folded.  Plastic.

Earthwalk Press Southern Wind River Range, WY: Hiking Map & Guide
Detailed topographic map printed on two sides, shows the southern part of Wyoming's Wind River Range, and is a continuation of the Earthwalk Press map immediately above.  One side shows the southwestern part, the reverse the southeastern.  The map shows most of the southern half of Bridger Wilderness, and all but the southern- and easternmost parts of Popo Agie Wilderness.  These areas are within Bridger and Shoshone national forests.  Also mapped is a large section of Wind River Indian Reservation.

Like the companion map above, the maps are half-sized compilations of USGS 7.5' topos (though this one covers the area of "only" 15 quads), and show the same elevation contours, water features, and woodland tints as the USGS quadrangles—but they are printed in easier-to-read ink.

This one has more information than the northern companion map, since it covers a bit less land.

Scale, 1:48,000 (1 inch = 4,000 feet = about ¾ mile).  Size: about 27 x 39 inches.  Folded.  Plastic.

 Yellowstone National Park

Earthwalk Press Hiking Map & Guide: Yellowstone National Park
Detailed topographic map printed on two sides. The north half of the park is on one side, the south on the reverse.  The remaining space on both sides is devoted to extensive discussion of backcountry regulations, hiking in bear country, winter visits, safety, and general information.

The maps show topographic contours (the ink has, unfortunately, bled together in steep areas!) roads, trails, ranger stations, visitor centers, campgrounds, picnic areas, trailheads, thermal features (geysers, hot springs, and mud pots), grocery stores, lodging, gas stations, boat launches, boating restrictions on lakes, and—what makes the maps especially colorful—areas burned in the 1988 fires.  The latter areas are distinguished in detail with areas where the forest was completely burned (“canopy burn”) shown in orange, and other areas with a mixed burn shown in yellow.  Unburned forest coverage is shown in green.

Printed on waterproof, tear-resistant plastic.

Scale, 1:106,250 (1 inch = about 1-2/3 miles).  Contour interval: 80 feet.  Size: about 39 x 27 inches.  Folded.  Plastic.

National Geographic / Trails Illustrated Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming / Montana / Idaho
Excellent newly revised topographic map of the country's oldest National Park, printed on two sides.  One side shows the north half, and the reverse side shows the south.  This latest edition has been enhanced with shaded relief which makes the form of the complex terrain easier to understand.  (See sample at right.)  Unlike the old edition, map details do not stop at the border of the park, but also cover several miles into adjacent National Forests, private lands, and other areas such as all of the lands of the John D. Rockefeller Jr Memorial Parkway, and the northern portion of Grand Teton National Park.

The maps show such features as topographic contour lines, lakes, streams, rivers, and significant peaks (with elevations in feet).  Other features mapped include trails (marked with point-to-point distances), major and minor roads, ranger stations, campgrounds, picnic areas, information centers, cross-country ski trails, gas stations, food service, and more.

Both sides of the map gives lots of good text on park features, recreation, safety, bears, regulations, outdoor ethics, and summaries of 20 major hikes.  Printed on waterproof plastic.

Scale, about 1:126,720 (1 inch = about 2.0 miles).  Contour interval: 100 feet.  Size: About 37 x 25½ inches.   Folded.  Plastic.

Old Faithful: Yellowstone National Park SW
New revision of a special series of topographic maps which each show one-quarter of the national park.  This one, printed on two sides, shows the southwest corner.  One side shows the area centered around Old Faithful Geyser and surrounding visitor facilities, and also includes Lower Geyser Basin, Shoshone Lake, and the West Thumb of Yellowstone Lake.  The reverse shows the section to the south, and features Lewis Lake, Bechler Canyon, and Lewis Canyon.  Significant portions of adjacent parks and forests are also detailed.

The topographic contours on both sides are dramatically enhanced with shaded relief for easy interpretation of the mountainous terrain.  The maps show roads, trails, backpack camps, point-to-point trail mileages, information centers, lodging, ranger stations, campgrounds, picnic areas, restrooms, and much more.  Text boxes around the margins of both sides describe the park in general, backcountry regulations and permits, horse riding and llama packing, wildlife, contact numbers and websites, how to behave in bear country, and more.  As an aid to GPS users, full UTM coordinates for selected waypoints are indicated on the map

Scale, about 1:63,360 (1 inch = about 1 mile).  Contour interval = 50 feet.  Size: about 32 x 22 inches.  Folded.  Plastic.

USGS Medium-scale Topo Quads

Saratoga, Wyoming-Colorado 1:100,000 scale metric topographic map
If this single quad from southeastern Wyoming along the Colorado border seems like an odd choice for a page devoted to Wyoming parks and forests, you are correct.  It is here available due to a USGS fulfillment mistake, and this seems like the best page to offer it!  But if you happen to be  interested in this region, the map covers the area around and southeast of the town of Saratoga.  This includes a large portion of Medicine Bow National Forest, which includes Savage Run Wilderness.  The few other towns or communities in the region are Riverside, Encampment, Centennial, Woods Landing, Foxpark, and Mountain Home.  Winding across the map is a large section of the North Platte River.  There are numerous lakes on the map, including Hog Park, Turpin, and Rob Roy reservoirs.

The map is bounded by longitudes 107 and 106 degrees, latitudes 41 and 41 degrees 30 minutes.  It is printed on one side only.

Features shown include elevation topographic contours at 50 meter-intervals.  Green tints show the extent of woodlands.  Roads are shown, with major, secondary, and dirt roads distinguished.  Also shows county boundaries, section lines, landing strips, campgrounds, railroads, and other cultural features.  (See sample above right.)

Scale, 1:100,000 (1 inch = about 1.6 miles).  Contour interval: 50 meters.  Size: about 44 x 24 inches.  Folded.  Paper.
