Benchmark Utah Road & Recreation Atlas
Excellent atlas with two major sections:  Recreation maps which, while showing topography in shaded relief, emphasize land ownership (i.e. which large plots are private, BLM, Forest Service, Indian Reservation, National Park Service, etc.) and are presented at a smaller (less detailed) scale than the landscape section.  On the opposite page from each sectional recreation map is a full-page guide to featured sites with a brief description.

The second section emphasizes the landscape, with the relief shading supplemented by a color scheme corresponding to elevation.  (See sample at right.)  Unlike many other publications, the maps in this atlas have been field-checked by "certified map fanatics."

A third, smaller section, shows the Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Provo metropolitan areas in detail.  A fourth, six-page map section gives you a map of the major highways of the whole United States, a regional map of most of all of the adjacent states around Utah, and a full state map.  The atlas includes a detailed index.

Scale: Recreation Maps, 1:730,000 (1 inch = about 11.5 miles); Landscape Maps, 1:250,000 (1 inch = about 4 miles)
Benchmark Maps, 2006 (third edition).  95 pages, about 11 x 15 inches, paperback.  New.

GTR Topographic Recreational Map of Utah
Full color road map for outdoor enthusiasts.   Information includes interstates with exit numbers, highways and secondary roads, color shaded topography, campgrounds, rest areas, ski areas, lakes and boating, state game and fish areas, and much more.

The topography is shown by means of contours at 1000 foot intervals, and this is enhanced by color tints to emphasize the elevations. This color tinting in combination with the tints used for showing parks and forests can make things look a little busy, but despite that drawback, the publication packs a lot of information in a small area.  The map is printed on one side, the other information on the reverse.

Scale, about 1:792,000 (1 inch = 12.5 miles).  Size:  about 24 x 33 inches.  Folded.  Paper.
GTR Mapping, 2006 edition.  New.
Item #GTR-UT.  Shipping weight: 0.2 lb.  Publisher's price: $3.95.  Your price: $3.55

National Geographic Utah GuideMap
Durable waterproof road map and guide printed on two sides.  On one side is the map of the whole state; it is as detailed as the average state road map, but because it is also smaller, the print is smaller as well.  Roads of all classes are clearly distinguished, and point to point mileages are indicated along major roads.  Shaded relief shows the location of mountains and canyons.  Color tints show the location of National Parks, Monuments, Recreation Areas, Wildlife Refuges, and Forests, Indian Reservations, and Military Reservations.  Also shows public campgrounds, points of interest, visitor information centers, airports, and ski areas.  Insets show the major streets of Ogden, Logan, and St. George.  A small mileage chart helps you calculate distances between key places in the state, a climate chart gives monthly temperature and "days with precipitation" averages for Logan, Salt Lake City, Provo, and St. George.  An index helps you locate the numerous cities and towns on the map and also lists their populations.

On the reverse side is a travel guide which describes points of interest in short paragraphs which show the influence of National Geographic's quality writing.  There are also several additional maps: major roads of the Salt Lake City - Provo areas, street detail of downtown Salt Lake City, details of Bryce Canyon, Arches, and Zion national parks, and Utah 12 scenic byway.  The descriptions are enhanced by excellent color photos of sights throughout the state.  You also get a chart of Park Service sites in the state which indicates the facilities and activities of each.  Finally, there is a calendar of major annual events and contact information.

Scale of main map, about 1:1,267,200 (1 inch = about 20 miles).  Size: about 18 x 24½ inches.  Folded.  Plastic.

Time Traveler Maps The Colorado Plateau: Map & Guide to Public Lands on the Colorado Plateau & its Borderlands
Excellent detailed road and display map printed on two sides.  The map itself is on one side and is decorative, strikingly detailed, and functional.  The Colorado Plateau is, in general, the highlands of southeastern Utah, Colorado west of the higher Rocky Mountains, northwestern New Mexico, and northern Arizona.  Accordingly, the map shows all of Utah, southwestern Wyoming, western Colorado, northwestern New Mexico, and northern Arizona east of Lake Mead.  Finely detailed shaded relief shows the form of the mountain ranges and canyons, a green tint emphasizes the higher mountains, and a white tint marks the highest peaks.  Major and minor roads are clearly distinguished (though no mileages are provided).  The maps also shows National Parks and Monuments, Historic Sites, Tribal Parks, and National Forests; public campgrounds and state parks; and numerous cities and towns.

On the reverse side is a travel guide with separate charts listing the facilities and activities of the parks, monuments, and recreation areas for each major state shown: Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico, including a few places not actually on the Plateau.  This side is also richly decorated with many small color photos and paintings featuring area sites, culture, and plant and animal life.  There is also general information about visiting the region, and a list of contact phone numbers and websites for further information.

Scale, 1:1,250,000 (1 inch = about 20 miles).  Size: about 26 x 36 inches.  Folded.  Paper.
