Shell EuroKarte, GUS 2/3: Ukraine Nord/Mitte; Weissrussland; Russland(CIS 2/3: Northern and Middle Ukraine; Belorussia; Russia)
First, what is "GUS"? These are the initials on this German-made map for "Gemeinschaft Unabhängiger Staaten" which is the entity readers may know better by the English name "Commonwealth of Independent States"—the loose federation that followed the breakup of the Soviet Union, consisting of most of the latter's former "Socialist Republics."This excellent map, printed on two sides, covers the southern two-thirds of Belorussia, the northern three-fourths of Ukraine, and a portion of western Russia. Specifically, it covers the regions including the cities of Minsk, Tula, Tambov, Kursk, Brest, Kiev (spelled Kyjiv on the map); plus also Warsaw in Poland is included on the western edge. The western part of the region is shown on one side, the eastern part on the reverse. The maps show what must be thousands of cities, towns, and villages. Names are in Roman type, but in German transliteration, which is often different than the spellings customarily used in maps in English. The names of larger cities are also given in Cyrillic, a useful feature, even if you don't read Cyrillic, since this is how the city names will be indicated on road signs.
Detailed are roads of all sizes, clearly distinguished. Point-to-point distances along major and secondary highways are provided in kilometers. Also shows railways, car ferries, canals, scenic routes, tourist routes, tunnels, and more. Other features included are national and nature parks, panoramic views, roadside restaurants and hotels, road-side restaurants, filling stations, churches and monasteries or their ruins, monuments, caves, camp sites, youth hostels, motels, airports, and other specific features.
An inset shows street details of central Kiev. Another inset is a schematic map of most of eastern Europe showing distances in kilometers between major cities. The legend explains the symbols in German, English, French, Italian, Polish, Czech, Russian, and Dutch.
Scale, 1:750,000 (1 inch = about 11.8 miles). Size: about 42 x 38 inches. Folded. Glossy paper with card cover.
