Most of the eastern part of the region is within Tonto National Forest; within this are Mazatzal Wilderness, Four Peaks Wilderness, northern Superstition Wilderness, and Salome Wilderness. Other areas shown include Cave Creek Recreation Area, McDowell Mountain County Regional Park, Salt River Indian Reservation, and Tonto National Monument.The most important highway through the region are state 87, state 188, and state 88. Most of the left side of the map is within Maricopa County (except for a hairline northern border area in Yavapai County), the right within Gila County.
Important physical features include Paradise Valley, McDowell Mountains, Camp Creek, southern Horseshoe Reservoir, Verde River, Bartlett Reservoir, Sycamore Creek, Slate Creek, Mazatzal Mountains, The Rolls, Salt River, Goldfield Mountains, Saguaro Lake, Canyon Lake, Apache Lake, Tortilla Creek, Tonto Creek and Basin, Theodore Roosevelt Lake, Sierra Ancha, Salome Creek, and Campaign Creek.
