Point to point mileages are provided for roads. Text is minimal, with two small boxes giving backcountry suggestions and basic park regulations. This map is not as detailed as the Trails Illustrated map (below), but is the best choice for most visitors to the park who are not planning on hiking off the roads. Point-to-point mileages to the nearest tenth are included for paved and dirt roads as well as trails within the park. USGS Death Valley National Monument, California & Nevada, Shaded Relief Wall Map
The photo at left shows this topo map on display at the store. The map is printed on one side only. It does not show current boundaries, and in fact portions of the recently expanded park are not even on this map. (Death Valley was a National Monument before it was upgraded to National Park status over ten years ago.) Yet, it is a treat to view, and is the only wall map (unfolded) that we sell of the region. Particular striking is that the elevation contours are enhanced with beautiful shaded relief which makes the landforms stand out so much better. It does show roads and campgrounds, and includes detailed coverage of adjacent lands as well.Scale: 1:250,000 (1 inch = about 4 miles). Size: About 24 inches by 38 inches. Rolled. Paper.

Pacific Crest Trail: Southern California
USDA Forest Service, Pacific Crest Trail: 2004 California Series – Southern California This is the first in a planned series of ten topographic maps covering the entire route. This one extends from the Mexican border 250 miles north to just above Big Bear Lake in San Bernardino National Forest. It includes sections crossing portions of desert mountains, but is predominantly in more coastal-influenced ranges. Shows segments going through Cleveland and San Bernardino national forests, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, Mt. San Jacinto State Park, and the BLM's Santa Rosa and San Jacinto National Monument. The map is printed on two sides, with each of four panels covering a major section of the trail. The map is designed such that if you cut it vertically down the middle, you would have a complete map of segment 1 and 2 on one sheet, and segments 3 and 4 on the other. The resulting twin maps are folded such that you can easily reference them in the field without having to open it out more than one fold—a very useful attribute in windy conditions.
Each map shows elevation contours emphasized with shaded relief, and the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) is marked more prominently than any other feature. Color tints readily distinguish the land management agencies responsible for the various reserves the trail passes through, including Forest Service, California State Parks, and Bureau of Land Management. Besides showing the PCT, the maps also detail about 4 to 8 miles of adjacent areas on each side of the trail, and shows side trails, dirt and paved roads, campgrounds, campsites, picnic areas, trailheads, water availability, parking areas, Forest Service facilities, and much more.
As good as the map is, this publication is more than a map: It also gives lots of useful information related to hiking the trail, including history, wildlife to watch out for, Leave No Trace wilderness ethics, common trees, and more, illustrated with many excellent color photos. Each trail segment panel also includes a trail profile, which helps you readily see where the uphills and downhills lie. Printed on waterproof, tear-resistant plastic, protected by a card cover.
Scale, 1:63,360 (1 inch = 1 mile). Contour interval = 100 feet. Size: about 36 x 47½ inches. Folded, with protective card cover. Plastic.
