Tom Harrison The Mono Lake Map Lee Vining - South Tufa - County Park - Old Marina - Lundy Canyon - Panum CraterExcellent new topographic map by Tom Harrison, printed on one side only. Centered on Mono Lake, this map shows most of the Mono Basin National Forest Scenic Area and other adjacent areas inside and out of Inyo National Forest. It goes as far west as Lundy Lake and Ellery Lake, and as far south as Mt. Gibbs and Crater Mountain. The area has more dirt roads than trails, so it is probably more useful for mountain biking or four-wheel drive than for hiking (though there's nothing wrong with hiking on dirt roads!). The elevation contours are accented with shaded relief. Forested areas are indicated with a green tint. The map also shows ranger stations, campgrounds (with and without water), RV camps, locked gates, and all classes of roads.
Scale, 1:63,360 (1 inch = 1 mile). Contour interval: 80 feet. Size: about 27 x 18 inches. Folded. Plastic.

Tahoe Maps Satellite - Relief Map of Lake Tahoe This attractive wall map combines satellite imagery overlaid with place names, roads, and trails, with lakes colored blue. Lake Tahoe itself is revealed to its depths, with shading and depth contours based on sonar mapping showing the form of the underwater landscape. The publisher calls this a relief map, though that is stretching the term a bit. For the mountains, apparently natural shadows are visible from the satellite imagery which gives some illusion of relief, but does not seem as striking as the artificial relief used to show the lake bottom. Coverage ranges from northwest of Donner Lake and Truckee, south to Caples Lake and Markleeville. Washoe Lake is in the northwest corner of the map, Loon Lake is in the center of the left side.At the bottom of the poster is an elevation profile of an east-west section across the deepest part of the lake and adjacent mountains. A brief text describes the geologic history of the Tahoe Basin, with notes on the imagery used to create the map.
Scale, about 1:101,376 (1 inch = 1.6 miles). Size: about 24 x 36 inches. Rolled. Paper.

Tom Harrison Maps John Muir Trail: Map-PackSet of thirteen separate maps covers the entire John Muir Trail, from the Mt. Whitney area to Yosemite Valley. The sectional format means you get detailed coverage, yet do not have to deal with a large unwieldy folded map. You just pull out the map you need for the day: each covers about a day and a half of hiking. Each measures 8½ x 11 inches, and if you folded it in quarters will fit in a large pocket, or you could roll it in a tube and it would fit in a deep cargo pocket or pack pouch, for ready access.
The maps themselves are Tom Harrison’s usual high quality, and show topographic contours enhanced with shaded relief, with a green tint showing the extent of the forests. Trails are clearly marked, with the John Muir Trail (which is here also the route of the Pacific Crest Trail) shown slightly bolder. Point-to-point mileages are indicated right on the map, which also shows ranger stations, campgrounds, group camps, horse camps, RV camps, pack stations, and Yosemite’s High Sierra camps. They are all printed on waterproof plastic.
Scale, 1:63,360 (1 inch = 1 mile). Contour interval = 80 feet. Size: 8½ x 11 inches (13 sheets). Flat (unfolded). Plastic.

Trails are clearly depicted, with elevations at junctions, and point-to-point distances indicated to the nearest tenth of a mile. The High Sierra Trail is specially emphasized. Also shows ranger stations, campgrounds, picnic areas, and pack stations. Groves of giant sequoias are also labelled---though the map doesn't tell you that's what the word "grove", when part of a name, refers to in this region. The UTM grid is provided for the benefit of GPS users.

Forest Service Sequoia National Forest, including Giant Sequoia National Monument, recreation map Detailed standard official Forest Service map printed on two sides. This National Forest is in the southern end of the Sierra Nevada, in four main sections; the upper section is west and adjacent to Kings Canyon National Park and northwest and adjacent to Sequoia National Park. The largest southern section borders the south end of Sequoia National Park, and extends south of, and to the southwest of, Lake Isabella. A smaller section is south of Lake Isabella, and the fourth, smallest portion of the National Forest is due east of Lake Isabella. The National Forest also includes the area specially designated as Giant Sequoia National Monument, which was created to give additional protection to Sequoiadendron giganteum groves that are outside the boundaries of Sequoia National Park. (As far as I know, the Clinton administration was the first to create National Monuments that were not transferred to the administration of the National Park Service, so now some National Monuments are managed by the Forest Service, some by the Bureau of Land Management, in addition to the majority still administered by the National Park Service.) Also within the region is Monarch Wilderness, Jennie Lakes Wilderness, Golden Trout Wilderness, Sierra Wilderness, Dome Land Wilderness, Kiavah Wilderness, the Kern River, Lake Isabella, and the Greenhorn Mountains. On one side is the map of most of the area, those portions south of Sequoia National Park. Color tints distinguish private lands, Forest Service lands (including adjacent National Forests), designated Wilderness Areas, BLM, State lands, Indian lands, and Corps of Engineers lands. Land lines are marked, with sections numbered. Lines of latitude and longitude at 7½ minute intervals are provided, and these, not coincidentally, correspond to the boundaries of more detailed USGS topographic maps; an index showing the names of the latter is provided in an inset.
On the reverse side is the map of the smaller section of the National Forest that is west and adjacent to Kings Canyon National Park, and this shows the same kind of detail described for the other map above. Both sides of the sheet provide much helpful information on the region, including points of interest, activities, safety, giant sequoias, and a chart indicating the facilities and activities available at numerous recreation sites in the region. The text sections are interspersed with about 20 color photos, showing the landscape, wildlife, and recreationalists of the area.

Tom Harrison Maps, Half Dome: Glacier Point-Yosemite Creek, Tenaya Lake-Little Yosemite Valley, Trail Map Excellent detailed topographic map, printed on one side only. The topographic contours are enhanced with shaded relief, which makes the form of the mountains really stand out. (See sample at right.) The extent of forests is shown with a green speckled pattern. The coverage of the map ranges from Yosemite Creek campground in the northwest, includes the east end of Yosemite Valley, Taft and Glacier points, Mono Meadow in the southwest, Little Yosemite Valley, Clouds Rest, and most of Tenaya Lake in the northeast corner of the map.Relatively little detail is shown of the facilities in Yosemite Valley: just the major landmarks and campgrounds and roads. This is primarily a map for hikers, and trails are clearly depicted. Distances between points are shown in miles, and elevations are given for all trail junctions. Though you could figure out the latter by reading the topographic contours, this is quicker. The map is ruled off in subtle but distinct lat/long grids for GPS users.
Scale, 1:31,680 ( 1 inch = 1/2 miles). Contour interval: 80 feet. Size: about 26½ x 18 inches. Folded. Plastic.

Plastic.
