Scale, 1:12,000 (1 inch = 1000 feet).  Contour interval: 25 feet.  Size: about 18 x 11 inches.  Folded.  Plastic.

Big Basin Redwoods State Park

Redwood Hikes Press  Big Basin Redwoods State Park, Annotated trail map
Excellent topographic contour map printed on two sides, shows most of the park on one side.  On the reverse side is a small extension of the main map, showing the section of the park connecting with the coast.  The maps use shaded relief to accentuate the form of the land.  The map not only shows roads and trails, but also includes point-to-point mileages calculated to the nearest tenth, the locations of footbridges (with or without handrails), steps, gates, memorial redwood groves, memorial benches, vista points, campgrounds, parking areas, and more.  A green tint shows the extent of forests.

Eight panels on the back side serve as a trail guide to eight specific trails or loops.  Each description is accompanied by an excellent color photo, a two or three paragraph description, mileage, elevation climbed, and a trail profile.  As a trail map and guide, I find it difficult to imagine how this publication could be improved, nitpicker though I am!

Scale, 1:25,000 (1 inch = about 0.39 mile).  Contour interval: 40 feet.  Size: about 22 x 17 inches.  Folded.  Sturdy paper.

Henry W. Coe State Park

Henry W. Coe State Park: Trail & Camping Maps
Though the park has expanded since this map was published, the map is still quite useful.  It is printed on two sides.  One side shows the entire park (as of 1999) in shaded relief and depicts roads, trails, creeks, backpacking zones, and campsites.  The reverse side is a detail of the more developed Western Area of the park and shows topographic contours rather than relief shading; in addition, the Western Area side includes point-to-point trail mileage to the nearest tenth mile.  This latter feature is an advantage over other maps, for the distances were obtained by walking the trails with a measuring wheel, which makes them more accurate than the official map; the newer maps employed GPS technology to obtain distances—a method which does not take into account minor twists in the trail and irregular terrain.  The most readily accessible parts of the Western Area were mostly unburned by the huge Lick Fire of 2007, and is little changed since 1999.  The map is printed in five colors.

The publication includes information on campsites, backcountry regulations, and climate.  It was the first publication of this business (Mindbird Maps & Books) which was then known as buddha-nature maps & books.  The map has been out of print for some time, but I located a small supply of slightly dented or edge-riffled copies here in my store, which I offer as reduced-price "seconds."

Scale, full park: About 1: 54,500 (1 inch = about 0.86 miles).  Western Area: About 1:22,600 (1 inch = about 0.36 miles).  Size: About 17½ x 30 inches.
Published by buddha-nature maps & books, 1999.
Item #bnmb1.  Shipping weight: 0.2 lb.  Suggested retail: $4.00.  Your price: $2.00   All copies have minor dings or dents on the edge which do not affect legibility of the map.

We also have copies of parts of the map online which you can print and use with our compliments.  See the link below.

Muir Woods National Monument

GGNPA, Muir Woods: map and guide
to trails, plants and wildlife including key to the self-guiding nature trail
Only about 1/6th of this sheet printed on two sides is devoted to maps.  On one side is a shaded-relief map (with faint topographic contours) of the region ranging from Mount Tamalpais south to Muir Beach.  Muir Woods National Monument itself covers just a small portion of the center of the map.  Depicted are hiking trails, dirt roads, and paved roads.  The map measures about 11 x 12 inches.  A smaller map shows a detail of the Nature Trail in the middle of Muir Woods.

The remainder of the map side of the sheet describes the ten stops of the Nature Trail, the history of Muir Woods, and eight area hiking trails.  The reverse side describes the life forms of the National Monument, illustrated with outstanding (apparently charcoal and pastel) drawings.  It is divided into four sections: Birds of Muir Woods (including a season-by-season checklist); Plants of the Redwood Forest; Animals Among the Redwoods; and Life on the Forest Floor.

Scale of regional map, about 1:28,500 (1 inch = about 0.45 mile).  Size of sheet: about 23½ x 18 inches.  Folded.  Paper.

Point Reyes National Seashore

Wilderness Press Point Reyes National Seashore and West Marin Parklands: Recreation Map
Detailed new topographic map printed on one side only, shows the National Seashore and generous stretches of adjacent lands.  These lands include Tomales Bay State Park, Samuel P. Taylor State Park, Roy's Redwoods Open Space Preserve, Audubon Canyon Ranch Bolinas Lagoon Preserve, and northern parts of Golden Gate National Recreation Area.  Insets show details of the Bear Valley Trailhead, Five Brooks Trailhead, the main camping areas of Samuel P. Taylor State Park, and trails of Audubon Canyon Ranch.  Another inset shows the main roads of the region, from San Francisco north to Bodega Bay and east to Vallejo.

The map employs elevation contours to show the topography, and green color tints to indicate the extent of forests and brushy areas.  Also depicted are campgrounds, picnic areas, trailhead parking, restrooms, drinking water, telephones, ranches and more.  Trails are distinguished according to user groups, showing which are open to horses, bicyclists, and hikers, and also showing special disabilities access trails.  Sections of the Bay Area Ridge Trail and the American Discovery Trail are marked.  The extent of the 1995 Vision Fire is also indicated.  Unusual for a trail map is the index to place names included with this publication.

Scale, about 1:46,890 (1 inch = about 0.74 mile).  Contour interval = 80 feet.  Size: about 36 x 26½ inches.  Folded.  Waterproof plastic.

National Geographic / Trails Illustrated  Lake Tahoe, Pt. Reyes, California-Nevada, USA, Mountain Bike Map
This unique topographic map covers two distinct, non-contiguous regions which have the one common feature of being popular mountain biking areas within a few hours drive from the Bay Area and the middle Central Valley.  One side of the map shows Lake Tahoe, straddling the border of California and Nevada, and includes large chunks of adjacent Tahoe National Forest, Eldorado National Forest, and Toiyabe National Forest.  It also includes Burton Creek State Park, Sugar Pine Point State Park, D.L. Bliss State Park, and Emerald Bay State Park (all on the California side); and Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park on the Nevada side of the line (as indicated in its name!).

On the reverse side you get a map of Point Reyes National Seashore and the Marin Peninsula.  Besides the National Seashore, the map also shows (with more detail in an inset map) Mt. Tamalpais State Park, Muir Woods National Monument, Tomales Bay and Samuel P. Taylor state parks, and most of the North Bay sections of Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Both sides indicate bike and other trails, with the bike trails rated by difficulty.  Other important features are also shown, such as campgrounds, ranger stations, parking areas, etc.   Text gives basic rules and hazards of mountain biking.

Detailed map printed on two sides shows the City of Berkeley's system of walking paths and public stairways.  Hilly east Berkeley is particularly rich in short paths connecting the terraced streets.  The map also shows planned and currently impassable pathways.  It serves as a street map as well, for almost the entire city is mapped with all streets labeled.  Shows parks and BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) routes and stations.  The paths are indexed, and a brief history of their development is provided.

Tom Harrison, Mt Tam Trail Map:
Muir Woods; Mt. Tamalpais State Park; Marin County Open Space; Marin Municipal Water District; Golden Gate Recreation Area
New shaded relief topographic contour map printed on one side only, made to Tom Harrison’s usual high standards.  Covers the patchwork of parks from Fairfax in the north, Larkspur and Corte Madera in the east, the Green Gulch area of Golden Gate National Recreation Area in the south, and Stinson Beach and Alpine Dam in the west.  Besides Muir Woods National Monument, Mt. Tamalpais State Park, and Marin Municipal Water District, also covers the trails of White Hill Preserve, Cascade Canyon Preserve, Baltimore Canyon Preserve, King Mountain Preserve, Blithedale Summit Preserve, and parts of Golden Gate national Recreation area.

The strongest attributes of this map are the accurately plotted trails and dirt roads, and the depiction of the topography; the former are differentiated so that one can readily distinguish those which are open to hikers, bicyclists, and horses—or some combination of the three user groups.  Point to point mileages for each segment of trail are shown right on the map.  The topographic contours are enhanced with shaded relief to more vividly reveal the form of the mountains.  Green tinting distinguishes woodland from chaparral from open areas.

In this newer edition, Tom Harrison has added the boundary lines for the various parklands which he had deliberately left off because it “would have made the map look way too cluttered with all the boundary lines competing with the different kinds of trails—and there are a heck of a lot of trails on Mt Tam. There is National Park Service, State Park System, Water District, County Open Space, and City Parks and Open Space lands—it's just a dog's breakfast of boundaries.”   But he has met that challenge and the public lands borders are now clearly distinguished—without clutter, and satisfying us land management agency enthusiasts.

Scale, 1:24,000 (1 inch = 2000 feet).  Contour interval: 40 feet.  Size: about 18 x 26½ inches.  Folded.  Plastic.

Olmsted & Brothers, A Rambler’s Guide to the Trails of Mt. Tamalpais, Muir Woods and the Marin Headlands
Complete Guide to Hiking, Biking, Horse Trails; Marin County, California
Detailed topographic trail map, now in its 10th edition, printed on one side only.  Covers the area from Audubon Canyon Ranch in the west, as far east as Corte Madera and Saualito, and southeast to the tip of San Francisco at the Golden Gate Bridge.  In between, it covers most of the Marin County portion of Golden Gate National Recreation Area, all of Mount Tamalpais State Park, all of Muir Woods National Monument, and much of the land managed by Marin Municipal Water District and Marin County Open Space District.

Detailed are roads, all classes of trails, bike routes, stables, camping, bus stops, parking areas, picnic areas, ranger stations, water tanks, and more.  Forested areas are indicated with a green tint, brushy areas with a yellow-green tint (though this distinction is not noted on the map), and the form of the terrain is enhanced with shaded relief. Point-to-point distances are shown on most (but not all) trails.

In addition, there is an extensive list of place names of the area, describing their derivation and a bit of history in the process.  There is also an index to place names, a list of facilities, contact information for services and more information, and more.

In noting the existence of this Olmsted & Brothers map and the preceding Tom Harrison Mt. Tam Trail Map, one will likely wonder which one is best.  They both have their virtues.  The Olmsted map covers more area, including the popular Marin Headlands region which Tom left out.   Though the Olmsted map is slightly smaller scale, the trails are nonetheless easier to read than those on Tom Harrison’s.  Finally, Olmsted gives much more information about the region.

On the other hand, the depiction of trails appears to be more accurately plotted on the Tom Harrison map.  When I compare the same trails on both maps, I find significant discrepancies between the two, and those on Tom’s look more probable (based on my own field experience in plotting trails).  Each map shows trails the other misses, but Tom’s seems to show more.  I also think the shaded relief is a bit better on Tom’s map.  If you want the least expensive map which is very good and covers the most area, get the Olmsted map.  If you are a map fan and want the most information possible, get both!

Scale, 1:28,575 (1 inch = about 0.45 mile).  Contour interval: 40 feet (or 25 feet in one corner of the map).  Size: about 26 x 30 inches.  Folded.  Plastic.

Pease Press Trails of Santa Cruz
Excellent topographic map printed on one side only.  Covers the state, regional, and local parks of the Santa Cruz area, including Wilder Ranch State Park, "Fall Creek State Park", Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, Loch Lomond Recreation Area, Quail Hollow Ranch County Park, Soquel Demonstration State Forest, The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park, Manresa State Beach, De Laveaga Park, and the trails within the city of Santa Cruz itself.  (Fall Creek is not actually a separate state park, but a separate section of Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, so the "Fall Creek State Park" label is a mistake on the map.)  Since the parks are all included on one big map of the region (rather than individual detail maps), there is also detailed coverage of the private lands between the public areas.  Elevation contours show the form of the land, a green tint shows the extent of wooded areas, a grey tint shows urban areas.  Shows major streets within the urban areas, major roads and park roads, trails (with point-to-point distances given for many, but not all trails), parking areas, picnic areas, campgrounds, restrooms, and more.  Trail symbols vary according to which of the three main user groups (hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians) are permitted.

Insets show details of Santa Cruz and Capitola beaches and vicinities.  The sheet is full of helpful information, including descriptions of the various parks and beaches and contact information.

Pease Press Trails of Northeast Marin County
Clear, detailed topographic map printed on one side only shows the many small parks and preserves of northeast Marin County not covered by other publishers.  Includes Olompali State Historic Park, Mt. Burdell Open Space Preserve, Indian Valley Open Space Preserve, China Camp State Park, Deer Island Open Space Preserve, and that part of Mount Tamalpais Watershed east of Alpine Lake.  These are all parks surrounding the towns of San Anselmo, Fairfax, San Rafael, and Novato.

The map shows elevation contours, with tints distinguishing grassland, chaparral or scrub, forest, urban areas, beaches, and marshes.  Trails of many kinds are distinguished, from paved bike paths to fire roads, to smaller trails open only to hikers.  Point to point distances are indicated in miles to the nearest tenth.  Also shows trailheads, visitor centers and museums, picnic areas, drinking water, toilets, grocery or delis, schools, and gates.  Text provides further details on parks, references, and contact numbers.  The publication is also transit-friendly, showing Golden Gate Transit route numbers, bus stops, and transit centers.  This is one of those maps that are so well-done you want to go to the places covered just for the joy of using the map!

Pease Press Trails of the Coastside & Northern Peninsula
Clear, detailed topographic map printed on two sides.  One side covers the San Francisco Peninsula from southern San Francisco (Mount Davidson Park, to be more precise) south to Montara Mountain.  This region includes Candlestick Point State Recreation Area, San Bruno Mountain, Sweeney Ridge, San Pedro Valley County Park, McNee Ranch State Park, and numerous local parks within or near the cities of San Francisco, South San Francisco, Pacifica, San Bruno, Millbrae, Burlingame, and Montara.

The reverse side overlaps the first map a bit and continues the coverage southwards from Montara to Lobitos Creek.  This section shows only the "coastside" (Pacific Ocean, as opposed to San Francisco Bay) portion of the Peninsula, and includes parks and wildlands in and around Moss Beach, El Granada, Miramar, Half Moon Bay, and undeveloped areas southward.

Both maps show trails (of course) and distinguish them by size and use allowed—and it looks like they have done an excellent job in including as many trails as possible—even short ones in city parks.  Mileages are indicated for many of the trails.  These are also comprehensive street maps, though only the more important streets and roads are labeled—enough to get you to the trailheads.  The maps are also public transit friendly, with transit routes (including buses, BART, and CalTrain) shown and indicated by name or number.  In addition, tints are employed to distinguish grassland and open area, scrub, forest, urban areas, and beaches.  Other symbols show trailhead parking, visitor/information centersm campgrounds, picnic areas, drinking water, restrooms, and more.

But that's not all you get:  There is also a list park agencies with addresses, phone numbers, and websites; a reference list of guidebooks and other maps; public transit frequencies by route; brief descriptions of the several dozen parks and open space lands shown on the map; and park regulations and facilities.

Scale,  about 1:29,780 (1 inch = about 0.47 mile).  Contour interval, 50 feet or 40 feet.  Size: about 20 x 30 inches.  Folded.  Glossy paper.
