Tom & Ray Magliozzi, Car Talk, With Click & Clack, the Tappet Brothers
Long before I learned to drive, I enjoyed listening to Tom and Ray: I like their banter, infectious laughter and all; they remind me of my years in Boston and Cambridge ("Our Fair City"); and finally, the car problems people call them about reaffirm my perception that—even if not for the environmental damage—cars are a lot of trouble!  But besides the laughs, this book will give you the basics of how cars run, and how to maintain them.

Daniel Schorr, Staying Tuned: A Life in Journalism
Now National Public Radio’s highly respected, even beloved, Senior New Analyst, this memoir focuses on Dan Schorr’s sixty years of journalism in newspapers, radio, and television.  The author, well on in his eighties, notes that he had to browse through old clippings to jog his memories, since he did not keep a journal; and that it took him six years to write the book because he is more interested in today’s events than digging around in the past.

It is full of interesting, thoughtful, and sometimes hilarious anecdotes about his experiences, especially from his professional life.  He chose the news business in high school, worked for Jewish publications, served a stint in the Army stationed in Texas, became a foreign correspondent assigned to the Netherlands, later reported on the Soviet Union of Khrushschev, the founding of NATO, and the building of the Berlin Wall.  Back at home he exposed the misdeeds of the CIA (and was threatened with jail by Congress for refusing to reveal his sources), was later embroiled in an ethical dispute with his employer CBS which led to his resignation, then was hired by the newly created CNN; and on to his “elder statesman” role at NPR.

Published by Pocket Books, 2001.  354 pages, illustrated with 16 pages of photos, about 6½ x 9½ inches, hardcover.  New, bargain remainder (corners may be lightly bumped).

Ray Suarez, The Old Neighborhood: What We Lost in the Great Suburban Migration: 1966-1999
The former host of NPR's Talk of the Nation brings his insight and research to the problems of America's cities. In the field of reporting, Suarez is one of my heroes.  He is a paragon of reason and intelligence, a refreshing contrast to anything you hear on commercial radio.  As you may know, he now appears on PBS's Newshour, With Jim Lehrer.

Linda Wertheimer, editor, Listening to America: Twenty-five Years in the Life of a Nation, as Heard on National Public Radio
The best interviews and commentaries from each year of NPR since its founding in 1970. "Wertheimer links her selections with a lively commentary that puts each story in historical context.  She also provides much insight into the evolution of NPR: year by year, we see it grow from the nearly amateur operation it was at the outset to the professional, authoritative radio network it is today."
