Geo-Graphics Mount Jefferson Wildernessand Mt. Jefferson Recreation Map
Detailed topographic map printed on two sides. On one side is the map of Mount Jefferson Wilderness, which straddles Willamette, Mount Hood, and Deschutes national forests (the majority is in Willamette National Forest). Significant areas outside of the wilderness are also detailed. Elevation contours show the form of the land, and this is the weakness on this side of the map: In many areas of the map the reproduction of the contours was poor, and they are faint or missing, except for the heavier index contours. Other than that, the map is undoubtedly better than the USGS maps on which it was based. A green tint marks the extent of forests. Also shows roads, trails, cross-country ski trails, heavy use areas, campgrounds, picnic areas, drinking water, trailheads, swimming areas, and many other features of importance to recreationalists. Accompanying text describes the area, gives wilderness and safety tips, regulations, contact information, and more. An inset map shows the Three Fingered Jack mountain peak in more detail. On the reverse is the larger scale map of the Mount Jefferson area. Besides being more detailed, it has none of the "fading contour" problems of the other side. In fact, the contours are enhanced with subtle shaded relief, which help make the topography a bit more understandable (only a bit, though, for the shaded relief is rather too subtle). The same kinds of features on the other map are also shown on this one, i.e. roads, trails, campgrounds, etc. Mileages between trail junctions are indicated on the map.
A rather curious feature on this map is that some contours are printed in black, rather than brown. The significance of this is not explained in the key to symbols, and judging by the location of these areas (at the top of Mt. Jefferson, for example, and in the higher reaches of steep slopes) I'm supposing it indicates bare
rocks. But it is not a conventional symbol, and it would be good if they had specified the meaning.
Both maps cover about one mile into the adjacent Warm Springs Indian Reservation to the east.
Scale of Mt. Jefferson Wilderness map, 1:62,500 (1 inch = about 1 mile); contour interval = 80 feet. Scale of Mt. Jefferson Recreation Map, 1:30,000 (1 inch = about 1/2 mile); contour interval = 40 feet. Size: about 24 x 37½ inches. Folded. Paper.

Geo-Graphics Mount Washington Wilderness Topographic map printed on two sides shows this federal wilderness which is a part of both Deschutes and Willamette national forests. The main map is on one side only, and shows the entire region around the wilderness including the northern part of Three Sisters Wilderness to the south. Elevation contours show the form of the land. Roads and trails are detailed, with trail mileages shown between junctions. The map locates campgrounds, picnic sites, horse camps, food service, trailheads, phones, boat rentals, viewpoints, lodging, fishing, sno-parks, swimming, drinking water, boat launches, and more. The reverse side is primarily given to text, but also includes a Mount Washington orthophoto map. The latter is a gray-tone mosaic of aerial photos overprinted with place names, roads, trails, and other details. It also has elevation contours, but they are so lightly depicted, that they neither interfere with the interpretation of the photo or are of much use. The text describes the region in general, the Pacific Crest Trail, the area's geology, wildlife, history, no-trace camping, mountain climbing, and safety.
Scale, 1:30,000 (1 inch = about 1/2 mile). Contour interval = 40 feet. Size, about 28 x 40 inches. Folded. Paper.
