DeLorme North Carolina Atlas & Gazetteer
Comprehensive road atlas covers the entire state in over 75 pages of topographic maps.  Each atlas page shows the region at the same scale as all other atlas pages in the book, for ready comparison.  All highways are depicted (with numbering), along with most local roads and many streets, and even many dirt roads.  Also shows the route of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail.

Other features mapped include airports and landing strips, railroads (active and abandoned), tunnels, major pipelines and powerlines, woodlands, orchards, vineyards, sandy areas, waterfalls; marshes, swamps, or pocosins; springs and wells, mineshafts and quarries, and public campgrounds.  Elevation contours enhanced by shaded relief depict the terrain.  The maps are discretely gridded with latitude-longitude lines for the primary benefit of GPS users.

A supplementary two page map shows the main highways of the entire state, and also includes a table for determining the mileage between 25 North Carolina cities.

The gazetteer section includes nine pages of tables or descriptions of specific features keyed to the map section, in these categories: Bike Routes, Boat Launch Sites, Campgrounds, Ferries, Freshwater Fishing, Hiking, Historic Sites, Hunting—State Game Lands, Lighthouses, Museums/Science Centers, Pier Fishing, Recreation Areas, River Trips, Trout Waters, Unique Natural Features, Welcome Centers, and Wildlife (refuges, centers, and preserves).  A comprehensive index helps you locate cities, towns, and rural communities on the maps.

Scale, 1:150,000 (1 inch = about 2.4 miles).
Published by DeLorme, 2006 (Seventh Edition).  88 pages, about 11 x 15½ inches.  Paperback book.

National Geographic  North Carolina GuideMap: Road Map & Travel Guide
Durable waterproof road map and travel guide printed on two sides.  On one side is the road map of the full state (which splits off western North Carolina and presents it in an inset).  Though this road map is as detailed as larger ones, the print is accordingly quite small—so if your eyesight isn't what it could be, you have been warned!  Besides showing highways of all sizes, the map shows point-to-point distances along the main roads in miles.  Also shown are scenic routes, auto and passenger ferries, national parks and forests and public campsites, state parks, points of interest, visitor information centers, airports, ski areas, and more.

Insets show the major streets of Asheville, Charlotte, Winston-Salem–Greensboro, Fayetteville, and Wilmington.  In addition, an index helps you locate the counties, cities and towns of the state.  Three climate charts show average temperatures and days with precipitation of Charlotte, Raleigh-Durham, and Cape Hatteras.

On the reverse side are additional maps: One a detail of the major roads of Raleigh-Durham, another a detail of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Knoxville, Tennessee region.  Most of this side is packed with travel information, with color photos giving you an idea of the places to be seen.  A chart describes the activities and facilities available at Park Service sites.  There is also a calendar of events in the state.

Scale of main map, 1:1,400,000 (1 inch = about 22 miles).  Size: about 20½ x 18 inches.  Folded.  Plastic.

Rand McNally North Carolina State Road Map
Good clear road map printed on two sides.  The full state map is shown on one side.  It shows roads of all classes, with point-to-point mileages indicated on all but minor roads; national forests, national parks and seashores, state parks, rest areas, and other places of interest.  Finding the cities and towns on the map is aided by a comprehensive index.  A mileage chart enables you to compute distances between 30 important cities of the state.

The reverse side is essentially a travel guide to the state, with information about many points of interest.  There are two detail maps, one showing the Cape Hatteras region, the other a nicely done shaded relief map of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and vicinity.  Seven more small maps detail the major streets of Asheville, Chapel Hill / Durham / Raleigh, Charlotte, Gastonia, Fayetteville,  Wilmington, and the Winston-Salem region.  There is also a list of airports keyed to the map.  A table indicates the facilities and activities available in North Carolina state parks and recreation areas.

ADC Charlotte, North Carolina street map
Large, detailed street map of Charlotte and vicinity, printed on two sides.  The main map covers one side of the sheet.  Besides all of Charlotte, also shows most of Huntersville and Concord, Harrisburg, Mount Holly, Matthews, much of Mint Hill, and most of Weddington and Stallings.  Colleges, business and industrial parks are tinted purple for quick locating, preserves and recreational parks are tinted green.  Also shows the boundaries of each zip code area.  In the corner is an inset map  showing Uptown Charlotte in more detail.  A warning: street names, while crisply printed, are smaller than on your average street map; if your eyesight is not acute for fine print, you’ll need to use a magnifier with this map!

The reverse side is devoted to a comprehensive index of streets, plus one additional map showing the whole metropolitan area; it will help you get around on the major throughfares without having to unfold the whole map.

Scale, about 1:45,300 (1 inch = about 0.7 mile).  Size: about 33½ x 42 inches.  Folded.  Paper.

Rand McNally Winston-Salem, Forsyth County, North Carolina, local street detail
Detailed street map printed on two sides.  The main map covers all of one side, and not only shows all of Winston-Salem, but almost all of Forsyth County of which it is a part.  Includes all of Lewisville, Clemmons, Bermuda Run, Walkertown, and Kernersville; and almost all of Wallburg and High Point.  Highways, throughfares, and local roads are readily distinguished.  As with other maps of large cities, the print is necessarily very small, and you need sharp eyes or a magnifier to read the street names.  Like most recntly published Rand McNally city maps, many of the streets perhaps 5% are not labeled.  Shows parks, universities and colleges, schools, cemeteries, hospitals, libraries, post offices, and more.  The maps is lined with the UTM grid at 30 second intervals for the benefit of GPS users.

The reverse side includes an northern extension of the main map, and covers much of the rest of Forsyth County.  Towns included are King, Tobaccoville, Rural Hall, and Walnut Cove.  Another map on this side shows a detail of downtown Winston-Salem; and a third is a vicinity map showing the main roads and towns of five full counties of the region, plus parts of adjacent counties.  Most of the remainder of this side of the sheet is given to the comprehensive street index for the main map.

Scale, about 1:41,184 (1 inch = about 0.65 mile).  Size: about 39½ x 28 inches.  Folded.  Paper.
