Maps of Africa and the Middle East

For maps of Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan or Turkey see Asia
Despite (or perhaps because) of its frequent use in the news, the "Middle East" is not a well-defined term.  Broad interpretations of it would include all predominantly Muslim nations from Morocco east to Pakistan and Afghanistan, plus Israel.  Strictly speaking, though, the countries of the "Middle East" are in Africa or in Asia (with the Red Sea and the Gulf of Suez being the boundary between the two continents).  As such Egypt is in both Africa and Asia.  And Turkey, if one includes it among Middle Eastern nations, is mostly in Asia but with a portion in Europe.

This website uses a narrow definition of Middle East, restricting it to Egypt, Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, the countries of the Arabian Peninsula, and Iraq.

National Geographic  African Adventure Atlas
Outstanding illustrated and oversized book is a delight for anyone fascinated with the geography of Africa, whether you are planning an adventure, reminiscing about past travels, or strictly interested in the continent at a distance.  National Geographic describes it well itself:

"The atlas features 336 pages, over 400 National Geographic photographs, road maps, regional maps, National Park maps, and city maps make this the most complete mapping resource ever published for Africa.

Regional Information
Divides Africa into 15 geographical regions to help introduce you to the atlas.

Touring Maps
116 pages of contiguous maps of the entire African continent. Finely crafted, these maps include border posts, airports, all major and minor routes and distances, and much more.

Town Maps
Street plans of major African cities and towns, each with its own street index, buildings and sites of interest, plus accommodation options.

National Parks
Africa’s national parks are known worldwide, and the African Adventure Atlas includes 70 pages of park maps and information.

Adventure Activities
Popular adventure activities are highlighted for each of the 15 regions—from river rafting to hot-air ballooning, and rail journeys to hiking and pony trekking. Each activity is accompanied by maps that show the route and duration of the adventure.

Tourism and Travel
Contact numbers, embassy details, and listings of local tourist activities.
Over 400 color photographs
61 city maps
68 detailed national park maps
30 pages of detailed regional information
30 pages of regional park and reserve information
30 pages of adventure activities
118 pages of touring maps at 1:1,000,000 and 1:3,500,000 scale
10 pages of facts, figures, history and tourism resources

The atlas is the centerpiece in a suite of Africa products currently in development at National Geographic Maps. Working with Maps International, a South African company specializing in cartographic/GIS services and publishing, National Geographic and Maps International combined resources to create a line of products adhering to National Geographic cartographic and publishing standards. Maps International’s extensive groundwork in the region ensured that each product in the line was evaluated at the local and national level to verify the accuracy of the data, and contribute valuable resources, travel tips and cultural information for those looking to tour to the region."

Because of the large size and weight of this atlas, it is not likely to be something you would want to take along with you if you are traveling light.  And you are probably not likely to be taking in more than a few countries in any one trip, so you wouldn't really need to lug along the whole book.
