David P. Barash and Ilona A. Barash, The Mammal in the Mirror: Understanding Our Place in the Natural World
“Biology is everywhere.  DNA, genetic engineering, deadly viruses, and fertility treatments are just some of the many topics we constantly read and hear about.  But how much do most of us really know about the natural world and our place in it?  Never before have we heard so much about something we know so little about—the complexity of life itself.

“[This book] is an ideal way to learn about this world and how it makes us who we are.  It begins with the small stuff, what biologists call ‘skin-in’: a close-up view of DNA, genes, viruses, and cells; then it moves back a bit to explore the larger systems of human biology: sex and reproduction, the brain and behavior, and energy.  Finally, The Mammal in the Mirror takes a look at Homo sapiens from the revealing distance of ecology, evolution, and evolutionary psychology.  The result is an accurate, accessible view of ourselves that will enable every reader, regardless of background, to become bioliterate and able to understand the discoveries that make the headlines of today—and tomorrow.”

David E. Brown, Arizona’s Tree Squirrels
A detailed scientific study of Arizona’s remarkable tree squirrels; more different races are found in Arizona than any other state, namely three races of tassel-eared squirrels, four races of fox squirrels, and two races of red squirrels.  This diversity is attributed to the isolation of many Arizona forests.

Each of the species sections describe the squirrels (including behavior, food habits, and nests), distribution and habitat, life history (including recruitment, population characteristics, densities and home range, and mortality), and census techniques, and more.  There is also a section on squirrel management.

Includes many color and black and white photos of the squirrels and their habitat (some of mediocre quality), range maps, and charts.  Seven pages of references are also provided.

Daniel J. Cox, Black Bear
An oversize, photographic work with only a few pages of text (plus captions for the photos, of course).  The color photographs are exceptional and were made in the field; the books is, in fact, billed as "The first in-depth documentation of black bears in the wild." Most, if not all of the photos were taken in the north woods of the upper Midwest, where presumably it is more difficult to spot bears than, say, your average western National Park.  This reviewer, however, will not stoop to making such cheap puns as "You can't bear to be without this book," or "Price of these copies sold at a bear minimum." If this lack of humor should bore you, you'll just have to bear it.

Bruce Hampton, The Great American Wolf
A "well-written and researched history of one of the most fascinating mammals in North America . . ."

"For more than three hundred years the wolf was North America's most reviled beast, pursued to the brink of extinction throughout the United States.  Then, within the last half century, public opinion changed and the wolf became the symbol of wilderness, tolerated and even desired over much of its former range."

George Olin,  50 Common Mammals of the Southwest
Despite the title, this book covers all of the large mammals of the southwest, common or not.  It is the smaller species (rodents, bats, insectivores, etc.) where only the common ones are described.  A full page treatment is given to each of the fifty, with up to a third of each page given to an excellent color photograph.  The text describes the mammal along with its habits, size, habitat, range, other names, and similar species.  The scientific name is given as well as the common.

The cover of the new printing we sell has been redesigned, though it does feature the same coyote photograph shown in the older printing cover above.

Ron Russo, Mountain State Mammals: A Guide to Mammals of the Rocky Mountain Region
Illustrations by Barbara Downs
Wonderful pocket-sized field guide to the mammals of Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico.  Includes all large and medium-sized species, and representatives of smaller species (such as gophers and bats).  It does not include moles and shrews, which are rarely encountered.  Each of the mammals is depicted by a softly detailed drawing of the adult, plus also the skull, the scat, and tracks.  Text describes the habits, habitat, food, and enemies of each.  Dental formulas are included: numbers which indicate the numbers of each kind of teeth (incisors, canines, premolars, and molars) found in the upper and lower jaws which further aids the identification of skulls.  Range maps show where each species may be found within the mountain states.

Ron Russo and Pam Olhausen, Pacific Coast Mammals: A Guide to Mammals of the Pacific Coast States, their Tracks, Skulls, and Other Signs
Pocket-sized field guide to the mammals of Washington, Oregon, and California, includes all of the large and medium-sized species, with common representatives of most of the more numerous smaller groups, and with a bias toward including more commonly seen species (for example, it describes six of eleven tree and ground squirrels, but only three of the twenty-five known bat species of the region are included).  Each is illustrated with a line drawing showing the adult (not quite as expertly rendered as those in Mountain State Mammals, but identifiable), plus also skull, scat, and tracks.  Text describes the habits, habitat, food, and enemies of each.  Dental formulas are included: numbers which indicate the numbers of each kind of teeth (incisors, canines, premolars, and molars) found in the upper and lower jaws which further aids the identification of skulls.  Range maps show where each species may be found within the three Pacific states.

Glen Searfoss,  Skulls and Bones:  A Guide to the Skeletal Structures and Behavior of North American Mammals
A great reference that fills a need not met by any other.  While many mammal books show illustrations of skulls, this one shows illustrations of other parts of the skeletal structure as well.  And the book goes beyond mere identification: It gives you an understanding of the functions of each part, and how the structure helps you learn about the animal's habits.
Includes step-by-step instruction on collecting and preparing specimens.

Elizabeth Marshall Thomas, The Tribe of Tiger: Cats and Their Culture
Not another cute kitty book, this excellent work is a reflective study of the cat family as a whole.  Thomas considers the behavior of mountain lions (pumas), African lions, and tigers, as well as your domestic cats, drawing on her own experience (she lived in the Kalahari).  Her insights are fascinating; I particularly like her analogy that the territory of a mountain lion is like its own ranch, which it protects from competitors which might harm its livestock (usually deer).  This is certainly one of the best popular animal behavior books I have read.
