Maps of the Lesser Antilles
Including the Virgin Islands
Nelles Caribbean: Lesser Antilles Excellent detailed travel map printed on two sides. One side is dominated by a map of most of the Caribbean—omitting only the western portion which has few islands. This regional map shows extreme southern Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola (the island on which are located Haiti and the Dominican Republic), Puerto Rico, northern Colombia, northern Venezuela, and the Lesser Antilles themselves. Large insets on this side show the islands of Trinidad and Tobago at large scale. On the reverse are the detail maps of the other islands of the Lesser Antilles: Virgin Islands (including St. Thomas, St. Johns, St. Croix, Tortola, Anegada, and Virgin Gorda), Curaçao, Aruba, Bonaire, Barbados, Anguilla and St. Martin (Sint Maarten), St. Barts, Saba, St. Eustatius, The Grenadines, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, Montserrat, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Canouan, Barbuda, Antigua, Saint Lucia, Guadeloupe, La Desirade, Martinique, and Dominica. All maps show major and minor roads, railways, national parks, beaches, golf courses, lighthouses, caves, hotels, and other places of interest. Shaded relief vividly depicts the form of the mountains.
Scale, Caribbean map, 1:2,500,000 (1 inch = about 39.5 miles); scale of detail maps vary, but most are about 1:300,000 (1 inch = about 4.7 miles). Size: about 31 x 19½ inches. Folded. Paper with card cover.

MapEasy's Guidemap to The Caribbean, Southern Islands Billed by the publisher as “A Location Map and Guidebook in one!”, this publication is more guide than map. The maps, though fairly large scale, are more artsy than accurate (the base maps appear to have been painted with watercolors). They give you the general idea of where features are located, but I don’t recommend that you use them as road maps. Roads are shown, but no distinction is made between class of road, and they are not plotted in detail. Still, this publication gives you detailed notes on specific hotels, resorts, parks, and other attractions, with phone numbers for reservations or further details. Islands featured are Martinique, Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Jamaica, and Barbados. An area map shows the relative locations of the islands.Scale, various; island maps range in scale from about 1:175,000 (1 inch = about 2-3/4 miles) to 1:824,000 (1 inch = about 13 miles). Size: about 27 x 18 inches. Folded. Plastic.

Army Map Service, Grenada, Lesser AntillesThis once classified aeronautical chart also serves as a topographic map and general reference for a number of islands in the southern Caribbean, including Grenada and Saint Vincent, and the numerous smaller islands in between. The map is printed on
one side only and shows all islands at the same scale. Elevation contours and color tints depict the mountains, green tints show the extent of woodlands. (See sample at right.) Highways and towns are mapped, as are landing strips. Offshore, depth contours represent undersea topography, and notes indicate the type of substrate (e.g. coral, sand, mud).Given that the air information on this map dates to February 1969, it is not recommended for flight planning.
Scale, 1:250,000 (1 inch = about 3.9 miles). Contour interval = about 330 feet. Size: about 22 x 28½ inches. Folded. Paper.
Published by Army Map Service (distributed by USGS), 1969. New. Stamped "declassified".

The maps show roads of all classes, a few hiking trails, ruins, points of interest, historic churches, scenic views, golf courses, ranger stations, camping facilities, marinas, and seaplane ports. On the reverse side is an index to place names and to city streets, plus information on Coral Reefs, Coral Types, Climate, Beaches, and General Information. International Travel Maps, US Virgin Islands Detailed travel map printed on one side only, shows the islands of St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix plus surrounding minor islands. The map is split into two main sections, the upper half covering the first two named islands, and the lower St. Croix at a somewhat more detailed scale. An inset shows the main streets of central Charlotte Amalie (on St. Thomas), and another inset shows the streets of central Christiansted (on St. Croix).Immediately obvious when you view the map are the color tints emphasizing the elevation contours of the land. The map distinguishes major, primary, secondary, and "other" roads, though the distinction is rather subtle. It also shows tracks and trails. Recreational amenities located include hotels, points of interest, camp sites, golf courses, view points, and SCUBA diving. Marginal notes give a bit of background on the history and geography of each major island.
There is one mistake on the map that I noticed: A small section of Tortola Island (a part of the British section of the island group) is shown in outline, and under the name is the note "See the other side for details." But the other side of the map is blank! Apparently, the mapmakers were originally planning on showing the British Virgin Islands on the reverse side, but changed their plans and forgot to remove the cross-reference.
Scale of St. Thomas and St. John map, 1:54,000 (1 inch = about 0.85 mile); St. Croix map, 1:45,000 (1 inch = about 0.71 mile). Contour interval = 100 feet. Size: about 34½ x 27 inches. Folded. Glossy paper.
