Daniel Boone National Forest

outrageGIS Mapping, The Gorge: Trail Hiking & Outback Camping Guide
Map and guide set covering the Red River Gorge and neighboring areas, including Red River Gorge Geologic Area, Clifty Wilderness and Natural Bridge State Resort Park.  This area is within the Stanton Ranger District of Daniel Boone National Forest (though this is not mentioned anywhere in the publication).  The set consists of three two-sided maps, a guide booklet, and even three picture postcards.

On one side of one map is a multi-color shaded relief area map which serves as a key to the locations of the other, more detailed maps.  It shows access roads and visitor facilities, such as RV parks, tent camps, gift shops, dining, picnic areas, restrooms, fishing, and more.  The other five maps are based on aerial photographs which have been overprinted with elevation contours at 100-foot intervals, roads, and trails.  Point-to-point distances are given to the nearest 1/8 mile.  The maps also mark viewpoints, stairs, shelters, foot bridges, campgrounds and other visitor facilities.  It is also gridded with 500-meter UTM grids.  (See sample above right.)

The guide booklet shows black & white images of the region and gives suggested hikes with trail profiles.  It also briefly describes area regulations.

Scale of trail maps, 1:12,000 (1 inch = 1000 feet = about 0.19 mile).  Contour interval = 100 feet.  Size: about 17 x 11 inches.  Folded.  Heavy paper.

Mammoth Cave National Park

National Geographic/Trails Illustrated Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky, USA
Detailed topographic map printed on two sides.  One side shows the map of the whole park, which is bisected by the Green River and features many trails; the caves themselves are not the only attraction!  The map shows topographic contours, wooded areas, cave entrances, roads, trails, buildings, boat launches, parking areas, campgrounds and other visitor facilities.

The reverse side contains information on the park in general, cave tours, camping, river recreation, backcountry regulations, safety tips, and the geology of the region.  This side is dominated by two computer-generated maps: one a fairly rough shaded relief map of the whole region showing park boundaries and major roads; the other an oblique terrain map focusing on the heart of the park.  There are three other maps on this side: a large scale outline map showing details of roads, trails and facilities in the Mammoth Cave historic entrance area; the second a regional map showing the park’s location within Kentucky; the last a local location map showing the park in relation to adjacent towns and roads.  This publication does not include a map of any part of the cave itself.

Scale, about 1:28,000 (1 inch = about 0.44 mile).  Contour interval: 20 feet.  Size: about 37 x 25 inches.  Folded.  Plastic.
