USGS State of Hawaii, shaded relief wall map
Large, striking physical map, printed on one side only, shows the terrain of the volcanic island chain in impressive detail.  The major islands run across the center of the sheet, while an inset shows the entire island chain.  Lowlands are accented with a green tint, mountains are shown in brown, with relief shading to make the topography stand out.  (The image at left is somewhat distorted at the edges, a product of our digital camera, not any defect in the map itself.  The detail scan at lower right gives you a better idea of the actual colors.)

This is not a map that is much use for planning trips, though, for it shows no roads, no airports, no parks, and almost no cities and towns.  The only traces of human habitation depicted on the map are the county seats, plus a few reservoirs.   This map is therefore of most use for learning the physical geography of the islands, for it does show and name mountains and mountain ranges, streams, points, bays, and other features, with elevations of selected high points in feet.  (See detail at right.)  The underwater topography is indicated by means of depth contours at the 100 fathom mark, at 500 fathoms, and at 500 fathom intervals beyond that.

The map is also a fine example of cartographic art which will dominate and enhance a wall.

Scale, 1:500,000 (1 inch = about 7.9 miles).  No elevation contours.  Size: about 52 x 36 inches.  Rolled.  Paper.
