Additional symbols mark places with notable natural interest, fortresses, historical vestiges, falls, industries, lighthouses, local fairs, beaches, hotels, and more. (See sample at right.) Eleven special symbols show areas where one may find particular protected species of wildlife (though given the political situation in recent years, it is doubtful how protected they remain).The legend explains most symbols in English and French. All other text and place names are in French only. No detail is shown on the Dominican Republic side of the border.
