Geologic Maps
USGS The North America Tapestry of Time and TerrainA striking, recently issued map showing the major types and ages of the rock formations of North America. Coverage includes Central America and the islands of the Caribbean, plus Hawaii (not a part of North America) but omitting Greenland (which is). As with standard geological maps, the different rock units are shown in bright, easily distinguished colors (having nothing to do with the actual color of the rocks, I might add), and are described in a separate key. Here, they are shown in combination with detailed digital elevation data presented in the form of shaded relief. The map's production was a collaborative effort of the US Geological Survey, Geological Survey of Canada, and the Mexican Consejo de Resursos Minerales.
There are also inset maps showing the distribution of sedimentary, volcanic, plutonic, and metamorphic rocks. The land masses and text are given a dramatic effect by the use of a solid black, borderless background. Text is in English, French, and Spanish.

USGS Geologic Map of the Conterminous United States and Puerto Rico Postcard
This is a simplified geologic map of the country (excluding Alaska and Hawaii) in standard postcard format. The map shows distinct colors for seven major groups of rocks, with very little other detail. Five major rivers (the Columbia, Colorado, Missouri, Mississippi, Rio Grande, and Ohio) are labelled and delineated, the five Great Lakes are labelled, and only three cities marked (San Francisco, Denver, and Washington). Also shows the 200 meter depth contour marking the edge of the continental shelf. A key tells you which colors correspond to which rock groups. On the reverse is a brief explanation, which tells the ages of each rock group and other details. space is provided for your correspondence and the recipient's address, as on a standard postcard.
Scale, about 1:32,000,000 (1 inch = about 505 miles). Size: 6 x 4¼ inches. Printed on card stock.
Published by US Geological Survey, undated (but based on maps published 1974 and 1965). New.
