An all-photographic field guide to mushrooms of North America north of Mexico, covering 703 species, and featuring 762 high-quality color photographs. There are notes on hundreds of additional species similar to those treated in full. The color plates are arranged by basic appearance, including structure and color, to make them easier to locate. The plates are referenced to the text. Each species covered gets about one-half to full page treatment, and includes common name, scientific name (including older names used), family and order, description (with key features italicized, edibility, months to be found, habitat, range, and look-alikes. Many entries are accompanied by a small line drawing which shows features not readily seen in the photos. There is also a section on spore prints, and several pages of general advice on cooking and eating wild mushrooms, plus an index which doubles as a checklist.
As with other titles in the National Audubon Society field guide series, it has a durable flexible vinyl cover, and is narrow enough to easily fit into a vest or jacket pocket.
