ITM Beijing, China street and regional road mapDetailed street and road map printed on two sides. On one side is the street map showing most of Beijing, and depicting major streets, prominent buildings and institutions, parks, and more.
On the reverse is a road map of the region surrounding Beijing, extending about 12 miles south of the city, about 16 miles west, about 24 miles north, and about 20 miles east. Color tints show general elevation levels (though unfortunately, the mapmakers neglected to provide a key to what elevation levels each color represents). The existing and former locations of the Great Wall are represented. The map clearly distinguishes expressways, state highways, major and minor roads, and railways. Also shows points of interest, tempes, airports, and more. (See sample at right.) The legend explains these symbols, but they neglected to provide a bar scale. The cover indicates that the scale for this side as expressed as a ratio is 1:100,000, but most users will have little idea of what that means without further explanation (which I provide below!). The map itself is on one side, and shows not only the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, but also large portions of adjacent regions, including all of Nepal and Bhutan, and parts of northern India. Almost as large a portion of non-Tibetan China is shown as Tibet itself, an area rarely covered in such detail on travel maps. The map is vividly colored with the land tinted according to major elevation levels. Shows roads of all classes, tracks and paths, and railways. Point to point distances along major roads are indicated in kilometers. Also plotted are glaciers, lakes, salt lakes, salt flats, deserts, national parks, palaces, monasteries and temples, historical sites, muesums, and much more. An unusual and helpful feature is that major place names are shown not only in standard Roman transliteration, but are also shown in Tibetan and/or Chinese characters. Symbols are explained in Tibetan, English, German, French, Italian, Russian, Hungarian, and Chinese.
