USGS State of California (Shaded Relief) Wall Map
Excellent detailed physical map of the state. The form of the mountains is rendered with brown shading that give a three-dimensional illusion, and the flatter areas are emphasized with a green tint. Topographic contours are not shown on this map—except for depth curves in the ocean. The maps also shows no roads, and cities shown are limited to county seats. Major peaks are labelled (with elevations in feet) as are major and minor rivers, creeks and lakes. Other than state boundary lines, no detail is shown of California's neighboring states. The sample at left shows the full map. At right is a detail of the Del Norte County corner of the map.All in all, this is a very handsome map at an attractive price.
Scale, 1:1,000,000 (1 inch = about 16 miles). Contour interval: 100 fathoms, shown for the sea only. Size: about 42 inches wide x 46 inches high. Rolled.

USGS California Topographic Wall Map, North Half Detailed topographic wall map, printed on one side only, with elevation contours to show the form of the land. Coverage extends as far south as Saratoga, Gustine, Merced, Oakhurst, and Bishop, and thus includes most of the San Francisco Bay region (but not Monterey Bay), and all of Yosemite National Park (but only the extreme northernmost sliver of Kings Canyon National Park). The map can be attached to the South Half edition of this same series, described in the next entry below, as they are adjacent without overlapping or gaps—but notice that the sections will be offset when joined, with the North Half about a foot and a half to the left of the South Half. Together, they are about 87½ inches high (7 feet 3½ inches), and roughly 82 inches wide.
Besides the elevation contours, shows lakes, rivers, creeks, reservoirs, marshes and coastal features in detail. County boundaries are highlighted in medium green, National Forests are tinted light green, National Parks, Monuments, Recreations Areas, and Seashores, and State Parks, too, are indicated with a pink tint. National Wildlife Refuges are marked in red diagonal lines. Federal Wilderness Areas are ouotlined in grey. Indian Reservations and military bases are tinted tan. Urban areas are marked with a grey tint; shows cities, towns, and communities of all sizes, with their relative population sizes indicated by the size of the type. Interstate, US, and state highways are indicated in red and numbered, with selected local and county roads also shown, but not labelled. Railroads and airports also shown.
Major landlines are shown, and the latitude-longitude grid is marked at one degree intervals. The UTM grid is marked at 50,000 meter spacing.
Note the 1981 date; this is the latest edition available. If you need the latest road alignments, current park boundaries, and other details, this is not the map for you, but if you need a general reference map, this is an excellent value.
Scale, 1:500,000 (1 inch = about 7.9 miles). Contour interval: 500 feet; depth curves at 100 fathom intervals. Size: about 63 x 46 inches. Rolled. Paper.

USGS California Topographic Wall Map, South Half Detailed topographic wall map, printed on one side only, with elevation contours to show the form of the land. Coverage extends as far north as Pigeon Point, Big Basin, Morgan Hill, Chowchilla, and Big Pine, and thus includes the Monterey Bay region, the Fresno region, and all but the extreme northernmost sliver of Kings Canyon National Park, and all of what was then Death Valley National Monument. The map can be attached to the North Half edition of this same series, described above, as they are adjacent without overlapping or gaps—but notice that the sections will be offset when joined, with the North Half about a foot and a half to the left of the South Half.

Imus Geographics Sierra Nevada Wall MapExcellent newly published map, printed on one side only, shows the entire Sierra Nevada plus generous portions of adjacent areas of California and Nevada. The coverage, in fact, extends from Mt. Lassen in the northwest corner, Buena Vista Valley (in northern Nevada) in the northeast, Tehachapi Pass and California City in the southeast corner, and over to the coast at Pismo Beach in the southwest. The map thus includes all of the San Joaquin Valley, and Owens Valley to the east, too.
Eye-catching shaded relief and naturalistic colors, in combination with fine detail, vividly portray the Snowy Range and doubles as a road map and guide to the numerous parks and recreation areas of the region. At this scale, the map shows many more local roads than are typically found on a state road map, and it even shows many major trails (though you wouldn't want to use it as a hiking map, this feature does alert you to trail hiking possibilities in the various areas).
This map is also published in a folded version, described on the California Maps & Atlases page. The versions on the page you are now viewing are printed on poster weight paper, and are rolled rather than folded, for a more presentable wall map.
Scale, 1:500,000 (1 inch = about 7.9 miles). Size: about 30 x 50 inches. Rolled. Poster-weight paper.
