< Forest Service, Mount Baldy Wilderness, Apache National Forest Map and guide printed on two sides. On one side is a topographic contour map of this small federal Wilderness Area of about eleven square miles, plus surrounding areas including Sunrise Lodge and Baldy Peak on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation, and Winn Campground in the National Forest. (The areas outside the Wilderness Area comprise over 3/4 of the coverage of the map.) In addition to elevation contours, a green tint shows the extent of forests, and roads and trails are also indicated. The reverse side describes the area, activities, regulations, and safety tips.Scale, 1:24,000 (1 inch = 2000 feet = about 0.38 mile). Contour interval = 40 feet. Size: about 24 x 22 inches. Folded. Game Management Unit 6A: Outdoor Recreation MapPrinted on two sides, this publication contains two different maps of the same area. The unit boundaries range from Lower Lake Mary and just south of Mountainaire south to just north of Strawberry. The area is in the center of the state and includes Mormon Mountain, Mormon Lake, Munds Mountain Wilderness, Stoneman Lake, Cornville, Wet Beaver Creek Wilderness, West Clear Creek Wilderness, and Fossil Springs Wilderness. Almost all of the GMU is within Coconino National Forest, with a small portion in the south including Tonto National Forest. The area of the map covers portions of Prescott and Kaibab National Forests, too.
On one side is a computer-generated shaded relief map tinted to show general levels of elevation. The shaded relief is a bit "choppy", unnaturally emphasizing horizontal lines, but it gives the general idea of the topography. (See sample at right.) Shows roads of all classes, distinguishing interstates, major and secondary highways, graveled roads, dirt roads, and trails. The dirt roads and trails are sometimes hard to distinguish on the map. Official Forest Service road numbering is also indicated. Railroads and power lines are also plotted. The entire map is gridded for GPS coordinates. On the reverse side is the same area, but emphasizing land management: color tints distinguish National Forest, state lands, private land, Indian Reservation, National Monuments, Bureau of Land Management, and county property. This map has all the other detail of the shaded-relief map except elevation tints and shading, and it is easier to follow the roads on this side than the other. (See sample at left.) Both maps give only major place names, and (other than numbering), don't name local roads, smaller peaks, or smaller bodies of water and waterways. The margins and borders of both sides provide information on the region, especially oriented toward hunters, but useful for other recreationalists as well.
Scale, about 1:126,720 (1 inch = 2 miles). Size: about 27 x 36 inches. Folded. Glossy paper (or plastic?)

Game Management Unit 10: Outdoor Recreation Map Printed on two sides, with the bulk of the unit depicted on one side and the northern portion on the reverse. Elevation contours accented with shaded relief show the form of the land. Shows section lines and township numbering. Color tints distinguish state, private, Forest Service, National Park Service, and Havasupai lands. Shows dirt and paved roads (but the only roads labelled are state and federal highways). Also shows stock ponds and water tanks. Grazing allotments are outlined in yellow and named.Unlike other maps in this series, UTM grids are not shown. But tick marks show the lat/long coordinates corresponding to the boundaries of the USGS 7.5' topographic maps.
The margins and borders of both sides provide information on the region, especially oriented toward hunters, but useful for other recreationalists as well.
Scale, about 1:120,384 (1 inch = about 1.9 miles). Contour interval = 20 meters. Size: about 27 x 36 inches. Folded. Apparently plastic, or may be coated paper.

USGS Chiricahua National Monument, Arizona topographic mapUSGS topographic contour map printed on one side only, shows this southeastern Arizona monument in great detail. Same scale as the four standard USGS 7.5' quads you would otherwise need to get to cover the entire park. Also includes a significant portion of adjacent Coronado National Forest, and private land. The map shows such details as trails, roads, buildings and the wilderness boundary. For the area it covers, it is much more detailed than the Northern Chiricahua Mountains map described immediately below.
Scale, 1:24,000 (1 inch = 2000 feet). Contour interval: 40 feet. Size: about 22 x 26½ inches. Rolled. Plastic.

Forest Service Northern Chiricahua Mountains: Coronado National Forest, Chiricahua National Monument Detailed topographic map, printed on two sides, shows a part of the Chiricahua Mountains, including Chiricahua Wilderness. On one side is the map, which shows elevations with contour lines. It covers the area extending from about four miles north of Chiricahua National Monument, south to the High Lonesome Canyon area. Large portions of adjacent lands outside of the National Forest are also detailed. Depicted are all classes of roads (with Forest Service numbering for those inside the National Forest), trails, power lines, Forest Service facilities, mines or quarries, gravel pits, recreation sites (campgrounds), gates, and more. Township and section lines are also shown. See sample at right. On the reverse side is a guide to the area, describing the highlights, safety, the "Leave No Trace Ethic," and recreational opportunities. A chart lists recreation sites and the facilities and activities available in each. Color photos give you an idea of what the area has to offer.
The elevation contours are apparently not plotted very accurately, for often they do not correlate with the more precise elevations given for selected points. For example, Portal Peak is shown as 8544 feet high, yet the summit is shown within a contour line which should correspond to the 8600-foot elevation line! Do not depend on this map, therefore, to give you very precise altitudes or slopes.

Coronado National Forest
Forest Service Coronado National Forest: Chiricahua, Peloncillo and Dragoon Mountain RangesStandard Forest Service map printed on two sides. One side shows the Chiricahua Mountains (including Chiricahua National Monument) and Peloncillo Mountains sections of the National Forest (the latter section is mostly in New Mexico). The reverse shows the relatively small (84 square miles) section which includes part of the Dragoon Mountains. Large areas of surrounding lands (private, BLM, and state) are also shown.
(BLM and especially state lands boundaries are probably out of date; BLM sometimes swaps or sells land in order to make the public lands easier to protect and manage; while state lands are quite often sold in order to fund public schools, and are not, in any case, open to the public.)The maps show roads, trails, Forest Service stations, lookouts, recreations sites, and many other features of interest. See sample at right. Several full-color photos give you a sample of the beauty of the region; text describes the main features and rules. Maps are dated 1975, though the cover gives a 1986 printing date and 1991 reprint date.

Emmitt Barks Cartography, Flagstaff Trails Map Great new topographic map by a local cartographer is printed on two sides and covers the numerous trails around the city of Flagstaff. One side is centered on San Francisco Mountain (known locally as the Peaks) north of town. The reverse covers Flagstaff itself (including the Flagstaff Urban Trails System, and the designated bikeways in city streets) and southward as far as Mountainaire and Upper Lake Mary. Other areas of special interest on one side or the other (or both!) are Fisher Point, Walnut Canyon National Monument, Observatory Mesa, Mt. Elden, Dry Lake Hills, Arizona Snow Bowl, Humphrey's Peak, Inner Basin, and O'Leary Peak. See location map at right for the extent of coverage. The greatest virtue of the map is that it shows the trails where they really are, in great detail. This is no mere compilation of USGS maps (which are lacking many present-day trails), but were field surveyed over a three-year period using a GPS. Point to point distances are indicated for each trail. It also shows forest roads (with Forest Service numbering), and indeed all of the streets of Flagstaff and outlying subdivisions (and would double as one of the best street maps of the area if it were not for the absence of all but selected street names!). The topographic contour lines are enhanced by dramatic shaded relief which makes obvious the location of the hills and mountainsides.Supplementary materials include a selection of trail profiles which give a good idea of the relative difficulty of each trail at a glance. There is also a chart describing and rating 45 important trails, and notes advising the user on trail conditions in general. The map is printed on waterproof plastic.
When I first saw an advance copy of this map, I told the cartographer that this is a map I had wanted to make—but since the quality is so good, now I wouldn't have to! (Running this map store would not have allowed me time for such a project for many years, anyway.) But since I have done some map-making, I will provide a few comments on what I would have done differently: First, I would use larger type to identify major features. There is little variation in size of fonts for the labels, and you really have to study it to get oriented. For example, I would have labeled Humphreys Peak in at least 14 point type, but it is, instead, printed in smaller type than its namesake trail, and is hard to read because it was placed in a shaded area. Also, I think the name of the whole volcano of which Humphrey's Peak is the highest point should have been boldly displayed in at least 24 point type. But this name, San Francisco Mountain (or the more common alternative, San Francisco Peaks) is not even on the map.
Secondly, the color-system in general could be more appealing and more legible. I don't have any specific suggestions, except that I would review numerous maps of other areas and see what works best elsewhere, then adopt that scheme.
Thirdly, I would want to measure all trails with a measuring wheel. The distances on the map are derived from digital elevation models, which will give you a good approximation, but can never give you the degree of accuracy that running a wheel over the actual terrain can. This is particularly true when the trail is rocky, which makes the actual distance you would have to hike substantially farther than it will appear on the map. As a naturalist, I'd probably also add images of common plants and animals of the area—replacing the trail profiles if space were too limited, but that is my own particular preference.
Despite these drawbacks, which may be considered subjective, this new map is undoubtedly the best trail map ever created for this region, and one which will be in my pocket or pack anytime I venture out into these beautiful wildlands around Flagstaff!
Scale, 1:35,000 (1 inch = about 0.55 mile). Contour interval: 50 feet. Size: about 24 x 37 inches. Folded. Plastic.

Lake Mead is long with numerous bays and several major arms; the map shows it at maximum scale for the size by depicting the major parts in four different sections. Two sections are shown on one side, the other two on the reverse. The spaces between the graphic depiction of the lake are filled with information on Access, Lake Profile (a description of the physical features of the lake), Fishery, Fishing Tips & Techniques, and Marked Fishing Areas (paragraph-long descriptions of 42 areas keyed to the map). The lake map itself shows depth contours in great detail, with a dotted line showing low-water levels. Also shows access roads, boat ramps, marinas, lights, and many (not necessarily all) buoys. No topographic detail is shown of the mountains surrounding Lake Mead, and very few names of these, so if you want to know the names and elevations of the peaks you can see from the lake, you'll need to get a different map. I've noticed a few misspellings of place names: "Haulapai" Bay and Island are actually Hualapai, after the Hualapai Native American tribe; "Cormarant" Cove and Cliffs should be corrected to Cormorant, after the bird; and "Poiute" Point should read Paiute, after another Native American group.
Latitude and longitude lines are marked at one minute intervals for the benefit of GPS users. Also, there is a table keyed to the map giving precise coordinates for selected headlands. Printed on waterproof plastic.
