Chugach State Park

Imus Geographics Chugach State Park: Chugach Mountains, Alaska
Excellent detailed topographic map printed on two sides.  On one side is the map of this huge state park (almost 500,000 acres) east of Anchorage and north of and adjacent to Chugach National Forest.  The map shows elevations contours enhanced with shaded relief, and with forested areas shown with a green tint.  Also shows glaciers, creeks, rivers, lakes, and numerous peaks.  Recreational features located include trails, backcountry and mountaineering routes, developed trailheads, access to mountain bike, cross-country ski, snowmobile, and ATV routes; campgrounds and backcountry campsites, ranger stations, and more.  The map also shows the streets of eastern Anchorage (with only the major ones labeled), and Fort Richardson Military Reservation.  The UTM grid is shown for the benefit of GPS users.

On the reverse side is full of useful information, covering the topics of campgrounds, fees, winter recreation, summer recreation, trails, ethics and rules, safety, and additional information.  Three color photographs give you a sample of the views to be seen, and an inset map shows details of Eagle River Nature Center.  This publication won the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping Best of Show award at their annual competition.

Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve

Two-sided map "based on USGS topographic maps and NOAA navigational charts and has been modified and revised by Trails Illustrated in cooperation with the National Park Service."  One side shows the entire park at a scale of about 1 inch to 4 miles, the reverse shows Glacier Bay in detail, including soundings and navigational hazards, at a scale of about 1 inch to 1.5 miles.  (The map is not, however, produced to navigational chart standards.)

There is much informative text on such topics as exploring the bay, vessel use restrictions, and traveling safely in the backcountry.  The main map also depicts the historic retreat of the glaciers in the bay, with dashed lines indicating the positions at various times during the last 250 years.

Tongass National Forest

Detailed topographic map, printed on two sides, features the more readily accessible Wrangell Island portion of the National Forest.  On one side is the map itself, which employs elevation contours to show the form of the land.  Color tints distinguish National Forest from other lands; forest lands include "Managed Stands" of timber, marked with the dates they were harvested, and part of the South Etolin Wilderness, on Etolin Island south of Wrangell Island (partly covered by the map).  Shows campgrounds, boat ramps, cabins, and shelters, with points of interest numbered and keyed to a chart.  Also depicts roads and trails.  The map is gridded with land lines as well.

The maps show roads, landing strips, seaplane anchorages, campgrounds, lodging, ranger stations and other visitor facilities.  It does not show maintained trails since apparently there are no maintained trails!  But it does show unmaintained trails, unmaintained routes (more or less cross-country), and winter routes.  Color tints distinguish private, state, and Native Corporation lands in the vicinity.
