DeLorme Alaska Atlas & Gazetteer
Topo maps of all of the state, with about one-third of the state in detail, and with the northern and far western areas more generally mapped.  About 125 quad maps with elevation contours show roads, railroads, major power lines, woodlands, lakes, quarries, campgrounds, parks and reserves, and much more.  The quads are referenced with GPS grids.  There is also an attractive fold-out physical relief map of the entire state, and another map showing the major routes through western Canada to reach Alaska from the lower 48 states.  Charts give information on national and state lands, fishing, hunting, float trips, boat ramps, wildlife viewing, and campgrounds. Other pages in the Gazetteer unique natural features, hiking, wildlife refuges, mountain ranges, and historic sites and museums.  There is also a 11-page comprehensive index which helps you locate the place names in the atlas.

To top it all off, there are nearly complete street maps of Anchorage, Juneau, and Fairbanks (omitting only the outlying streets).  These street maps each have separate comprehensive indices.

Scale of detailed quad maps,  1:300,000 (1 inch = about 4.8 miles) with a contour interval =200 feet.  Scale of other quad maps, 1:1,400,000 (1 inch = 22 miles) with a contour interval of 1000 feet.  Size: about 11 x 15 inches.  156 pages.  Paperback book.

Imus Geographics  Alaska, U.S.A., Topographic Travel and Reference Map
New intricately detailed travel and reference map printed on one side only.  Shaded relief shows the form of the mountains, while color tints give you an idea of relative elevation.  Shows paved highways, gravel highways, and dirt roads; distances between selected points on paved highways are indicated in miles.  Also shows ferry routes, railroads, the Iditarod Trail, and the Trans-Alaska pipeline, as well as airports and seaplane bases.

Boundaries of National Parks, Preserves, Monuments, Wildlife Refuges, Conservation Areas, and Forests are marked, plus also Military and Indian Reservations, State Parks and State Forests, Wilderness Areas, and Alaskan Boroughs.  Other features marked include campgrounds, ski areas, visitor centers, lighthouses, and more.

This map shows more physical place names (mountains, rivers, bays) than typical road maps, and because of that is rather more cluttered, with the type for most names rather small.  The only other feature of this map that I can quibble with is that while it distinguishes elevation levels with color tints, the cartographer has neglected to inform us what elevation ranges each color tint represents.

While most state highway maps index cities and towns, this one also indexes physical features—and as near as I can figure, doing random spot checks, seems to cover all of the place names in the index.  Because of the small print and less-than-optimum scale, I don't recommend this map as the only highway map you take, but it is an invaluable supplement and would serve as a key desk reference to the state's geography.

Scale, 1:3,000,000 (1 inch = about 47 miles).  Size: about 56 x 28½ inches. Folded.  Paper.

ITM Alaska travel map
Large travel map printed on two sides.  One side shows the north half of the state (plus adjacent Russia), from Denali National Park northward.  The reverse side shows the south half, overlapping a bit in the Denali region.  The panhandle region is shown in an inset at the same scale as the main maps.  The Aleutian Islands are depicted in a smaller-scale inset.

The map shows elevation levels with graduated by color tints (see sample at right), and also shows cities and towns, roads, major trails, rivers, lakes, camping, canoeing, trailheads, hospitals, major airports, and more.  Notes are scattered across the map giving information on area features and road conditions.  Indices help you locate place names on the map.

Scale of main maps, 1:1,500,000 (1 inch = about 24 miles).  Contour interval: 1000 feet (but elevations above 6000 feet not distinguished).  Size: about 39 x 26½ inches.  Folded.  Paper.

Rand McNally Alaska State Map
Standard road map, printed on two sides.  The full state map is on one side, and shows what few improved roads there are (relative to the vast area), plus cities and towns, airports, National Forests, Parks, Preserves, and Wildlife Refuges, State Parks (with or without camping), rest areas, and more.  There is a table for calculating mileage between important cities and towns, a list of visitor information centers, and frequencies of public radio stations.  An index helps you locate cities and towns on the map.

On the reverse side are small, detail maps showing principal streets of Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Ketchikan, and Sitka, plus the main roads of Denali National Park, and details of the Inside Passage from Washington to Juneau.  Each of these detail maps are accompanied by brief descriptions of the subject and some of the places worth visiting.  A chart lists state parks and recreation areas, provides contact phone numbers, and indicates some of the activities and facilities available in each.

MapArt Alaska Yukon NWT road map
Detailed road map printed on two sides shows eastern Alaska (that portion accessible by highway from Canada), and adjacent Yukon and Northwest Territories in Canada.  On one side is the main map, which ranges from Gates of the Arctic National Park and Prudhoe Bay in the upper left corner, east to Great Slave Lake (shown in an inset in the upper right corner), and as far south as Glacier Bay and northern British Columbia.  By choosing to include only those portions of Alaska which can be reached directly by road, the publisher is able to show the area at a larger and more detailed scale than most other Alaska road maps we sell.  Shaded relief is artfully employed to reveal the form of the mountains.  Point-to-point distances along Canadian highways are indicated in kilometers, along US highways in miles.  Elevations of important summits are indicated in feet when in the US and meters when in Canada (or on the border).  Also shows parks (with and without camping), other camping areas, points of interest, information centers, ski areas, ferry routes, railways, time zone boundaries, and much more.  A small inset map shows the main roads of the entire region, including those few in far western Alaska.

On the reverse side are nine inset maps.  One of these is a southern extension of the main map, showing the panhandle of Alaska at an even larger scale.  The others are all street maps of Alaskan and Canadian cities.  Anchorage is actually covered in two insets: the large shows about half of the city in detail, the smaller shows just the main roads, but of the entire city.  Most of Fairbanks, Alaska is also shown in street-by-street detail.  The gold rush towns of Dawson, Yukon Territory, and Skagway, Alaska are each shown in very great detail, with historical buildings, museums, and inns individually labeled.  The towns of Whitehorse and Yellowknife are both covered in nearly complete street maps as well.  The last of the insets is a small area detail of Juneau and Mendenhall Valley, Alaska.

As you can see in the image, this map has two covers: one side emphasizes Alaska, the other side emphasizes Yukon and the Northwest Territories (NWT).

Scale of main map, 1:2,000,000 (1 inch = about 31.6 miles); scale of Alaska panhandle inset, 1:1,600,000 (1 inch = about 25.3 miles); scale of main street maps: 1:25,000 (1 inch = about 0.4 mile).  Size: about 39½ x 27 inches.  Folded.  Paper.

Detailed road and recreation map printed on two sides specifically featuring southeast Alaska's "Inside Passage" and the panhandle of the state which features the capital Juneau.  On one side is the main map showing the whole region, with the relatively few roads shown in detail.  Also shows ferry and cruise ship routes, airstrips, airports, campgrounds, golf courses, picnic areas, lighthouses, and more.  Also shows wildernesses, national monuments, national parks, glaciated areas and ice fields.  The index not only lists cities and towns, state and national parks, and the Alaska Ferry System, but gives selected details about each place (such as population and facilities).  An inset shows the ferry routes between Alaska, British Columbia, and Washington.  Another inset shows a street map of Prince Rupert, Canada, with a secondary inset showing downtown Prince Rupert in more detail.

On the reverse side are many other street maps, all individually indexed, of the cities and towns of Sitka, Petersburg, Craig, Haines, Skagway, Wrangell, Juneau, and Ketchikan.
