Regional Raised Relief Maps ![]() Hubbard Scientific Knoxville, Tennessee regional raised relief map This three-dimensional vinyl map shows a section of eastern Tennessee, western North Carolina, and northwestern South Carolina. Of these three states, about two-thirds of the map coverage depict North Carolina lands. Most of the title city of Knoxville is in the extreme upper left corner. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is at left center. Asheville is in the middle third of the map. The highest peak in the southeast is in the upper right corner.
Maps in this series show elevation contours, with a green tint showing the extent of woodlands. Water features such as lakes, ponds, creeks, marshes, canals, and shorelines (where present) are indicated in detail. Shows roads and highways of all classes, and sometimes trails. Railroads are also shown. National, state, provincial, and county boundaries are demarcated, as are other boundaries such as parks and wildlife refuges. Other features shown in this series are mines, airstrips and airports, isolated landmark buildings, lookout towers, and more. The maps are lined with the UTM grid at 1000 meter intervals.
Few of the maps in this series are recently published. The manufacturer, Hubbard Scientific, uses data from the US Geological Survey, but USGS rarely updates any of the maps in this series; most use data 20 to 40 years old. This particular map is one of a few exceptions, having a 2002 date! Usually, you get them for the depiction of the topography, which rarely changes, not for current roads and city boundaries. In fact, many of them have an added appeal for their historical interest.
