Regional Raised Relief Maps ![]() Hubbard Scientific Johnson City, Tennessee regional raised relief map This three-dimensional vinyl map shows a section of northeastern Tennessee, southeastern Kentucky, western Virginia, and western North Carolina. Of those four states, more than half of the land depicted is within Tennessee. Cumberland Mountain stretches across the upper left, long and thin Clinch Mountain runs from lower left to upper right, and Roan Mountain is at lower right. Part of the city of Knoxville, Tennessee, is in the extreme lower left corner, Kingsport is in the center right third, and the title city of Johnson City is in the right quarter, a third of the way up from the bottom.
Maps in this series show elevation contours, with a green tint showing the extent of woodlands. Water features such as lakes, ponds, creeks, marshes, canals, and shorelines (where present) are indicated in detail. Shows roads and highways of all classes, and sometimes trails. Railroads are also shown. National, state, provincial, and county boundaries are demarcated, as are other boundaries such as parks and wildlife refuges. Other features shown in this series are mines, airstrips and airports, isolated landmark buildings, lookout towers, and more. The maps are lined with the UTM grid at 1000 meter intervals.
Few of the maps in this series are recently published. The manufacturer, Hubbard Scientific, uses data from the US Geological Survey, but USGS rarely updates any of the maps in this series; most use data 20 to 40 years old. This particular map is one of a few exceptions, having a 2002 date! Usually, you get them for the depiction of the topography, which rarely changes, not for current roads and city boundaries. In fact, many of them have an added appeal for their historical interest.
