Regional Raised Relief Maps ![]() Hubbard Scientific Charlottesville, Virginia regional raised relief map This three-dimensional vinyl map shows a section of eastern West Virginia and northwestern Virginia. The former occupies about 40% of the map, the latter the remaining 60%. The area is dramatically ridged with mountain ranges of the Appalachians, with Blue Ridge and Shenandoah National Park ranging diagonally from the top right corner to the lower center margin. The valleys of the North and South forks of the Shenandoah River are the flatter areas to the left of Blue Ridge. The title city of Charlottesville is near the margin in the lower right quarter.
Though it is not readily apparent, close inspection will reveal that this map is missing something: The light duty improved (paved or gravelled) and unimproved dirt roads, generally printed in grey in this series, are lacking. These are shown on adjacent maps, but not this one. This means that some local roads are missing, and you can find rural communities, remote schoolhouses, and churches on the map apparently inaccessible by road. Whether Hubbard Scientific has ever made one that had all the roads on it that the USGS paper original upon which it is based has, is doubtful. The Shenandoah National Park relief map Hubbard makes is basically an extract of this map, with the park boundaries emphasized, and it lacks the local roads, too. Be assured, though, that the most important hard-surfaced roads (usually federal and state highways) are shown (in black and red, or red).
Maps in this series show elevation contours, with a green tint showing the extent of woodlands. Water features such as lakes, ponds, creeks, marshes, canals, and shorelines (where present) are indicated in detail. Shows roads and highways of all classes, and sometimes trails. Railroads are also shown. National, state, provincial, and county boundaries are demarcated, as are other boundaries such as parks and wildlife refuges. Other features shown in this series are mines, airstrips and airports, isolated landmark buildings, lookout towers, and more. The maps are lined with the UTM grid at 1000 meter intervals.
Few of the maps in this series are recently published. The manufacturer, Hubbard Scientific, uses data from the US Geological Survey, but USGS rarely updates any of the maps in this series; most use data 20 to 40 years old. You get them for the depiction of the topography, which rarely changes, not for current roads and city boundaries. In fact, many of them have an added appeal for their historical interest. See below for date of the map described on this page.
